The Bells are Ringing

by Dr. David Fialk, Editor / Publisher

Excerpts:

I found the place my first week in San Miguel and moved in immediately. My ex-wife had been putting me up, and putting up with me, in her house in Independencia. Her mother remarked at the time, "He found a place in one week?!" Motivation moves mountains.

I introduced myself and asked if the noise from the church was a problem. He answered, honestly enough, "Sometimes they have a loud event in the backyard. You get used to the bells." Of course, those were the days, six years ago, before they installed the PA system.

I wonder, does anyone else within earshot notice when the hour strikes ten minutes early or late, or that White Christmas plays seven gratuitous notes before coming to an abrupt, awkward end?

Happiness is an Inside Job

by Luba Nikolayev, text and photos

For me there has often been a blurry line between running away and following your heart's call onward to a new life. Like the time I bought a one way ticket to Central America only a few days after I got dumped.

If I choose to run I know my problems will pursue. They will hunt me down until I look them straight in the eye and tell them, "I see you. I hear you. I know you're here to teach me how to be an even better version of myself, a version that I haven't met yet."

Sometimes I wake up in the morning longing for the delicious spring water that was ours in Costa Rica, the lush greenery, the abundance of the rivers that run into the ocean and my circle of women that always cradled me.

Incense and Herbal Magic

by Carmi Simon

Excerpts:

We had a Saturday routine that included going to buy tapers (candles) at a religious store, sold in every color of the rainbow for a nickel apiece.

I ordered two spoons of Black Cat and a spoon of Dragon's Blood. The couple raised their eyebrows like I knew something and said, "We'll take the same".

Spending two hours in France.
Without leaving San Miguel.

by Don Day

Excerpts:

First, an admission. I like almost any film about food or wine. I guess because I like almost any food or wine. The film, Back To Burgundy, is no exception.

The film is about the rifts that often come between generations, about the importance of family, and about the need for forgiving.
