Triple Goddess

Alchemy was the belief that one could convert lead into gold. Alchemy is the medieval forerunner of chemistry. The word is composed of the preposition al meaning sublime or excellence and chemy meaning chemistry.

Artists have always been alchemists. We transform materials into images. We take pen to paper and turn them into drawings. We take wet pigment, apply it to cloth and turn them into paintings. In this exhibition artists Shahastra Levy and Kathleen Cammarata present drawings and mixed media pieces that merge images with words to compose meaningful messages.

The Mending Heart

Levy created a triptych mixing pen and ink with collage titled "Triple Goddess" in which each panel has multiple words including the word alchemy twice.The individual panels are labeled Maiden, Mother, Crone inviting the viewer to contemplate these stages of life. In "The Mending Heart" three words are discreetly tucked into the drawing collage requiring the viewer to look more closely at the message.

Graceful in Our Becoming

In Cammarata's piece "Graceful in Our Becoming" watercolor is mixed with collage and has three sets of poetic phrases that are floating in a cosmic landscape. In "So We Might Dare" four sets of similar phrases are in the watercolor landscape. Both pieces have goddess-like women gazing into the sky at the clouds, the moon, the stars, and the words suggesting the inner life is melded with the outer life.

Shahastra Levy is a multifaceted artist –– illustrator, designer, painter. Drawn to the transformational soul qualities of art making, she works to transfer that essence into images and forms that inspire and provoke. Levy's imaginary "innerscapes" can be found in both private and corporate settings. Her most recent mixed media drawings are deeply personal portrayals of her outer and inner journeying.

Cammarata is in three mediums: painting, drawing, and mixed media. She has had over 25 solo exhibitions, the most recent one at the Museo de Arte de Queretaro where she exhibited 12 paintings and 60 drawings. She has taught in two museums and a university in the States. Her work is in collections in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe.
