Geraldina Chacón Domínguez
A journey through different paths led Geraldina to what is now the center of her life: a total devotion to painting and writing.
She was born and has lived in Mexico City, within a family passionate about art and culture. She studied English Literature and Comparative Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Later, she pursued studies in Drawing, Botanical Illustration, and Mixed Media at the San Carlos Academy. She subsequently moved to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, to attend the National Institute of Fine Arts, where she has participated in group exhibitions.
Oil painting is her primary medium. Her work focuses on color, texture, and the movement of brushstrokes, through which she gives a new life to thoughts and memories.
For her, painting is a way to enjoy the world that we have been given, and to share our joys with people around us, but also to accept—with simplicity and good humor—our setbacks and difficult moments. She has a particular affinity for Abstract Expressionism, finding an echo of this attitude within the movement—not only in its vivid use of color but also in the way American Expressionists embrace error, imperfection, and surprise, while still achieving absolute artistic unity in every piece.

As I paint, colors find their own form and place on the canvas. Different textures—made possible by oil paint—also emerge: ranging from highly diluted washes to the thick impasto I apply with a palette knife or a heavily loaded brush, a process I thoroughly enjoy.

My painting is basically abstract. I start with color as the primary compositional element. I delight in colors for their own sake. I enjoy placing them on the canvas based on their affinities, contrasts, and resonances. I start with very simple forms—which nonetheless represent lived experiences and memories in their essence—and these help me view things from new perspectives.

I generally start with a basic structure, but in the process there is also intuition and freedom in the creation of images, leaving room for the unexpected and for chance—which ultimately proves very valuable to the final composition.

|
In essence, I always work with existing images and that inner world we all carry within us—and cannot always put into words, except, perhaps, in poetry. And much like poetry, which expands our horizons, each painting reveals a new world to me.

Geraldina's work is represented by Blue Moon Gallery in San Miguel de Allende and El Zapote in Mérida, Yucatán.
