Dreaming is not a luxury, it's resistance.
A reflexion on healing, creating and returning to look with new eyes.
*
When I first taught weaving classes at the Waldorf school, something inside me shifted.
Seeing the space, the children, the colors, the sounds, the games, the songs, the fruits, the watercolors, the clay, the crafts, the carpentry... everything enveloped me.
Everything was beautiful.
In that moment, I realized everything I had personally missed in school.
I asked myself:
What would have become of me if I had grown up in a Waldorf school?
But I also saw, with an open soul, my opportunity for healing:
To heal that girl who was ignored by her teachers.
To heal the wounds of those who made me feel stupid,
who didn't see me,
who didn't understand me,
who made a diagnosis to justify their lack of sensitivity.
I saw the opportunity to relearn, to experience teaching from a different perspective,
to know that I still have time.
I have a vivid image:
a little girl at school, holding a pen, told me that every night she left it by the window because her elf slept there.
I looked at her, trying to understand what she was telling me.
My mind thought: "That's not true,"
but seeing her eyes, her gaze, the gentle blinking of her soul...
I felt it was true.
I wanted to believe.
I wanted to live what she lived.
I wanted to inhabit that truth.
I realize that we have been raised in a profoundly materialistic world.
And what does that mean?
That they robbed us of the ability to dream.
They convinced us that "having our feet on the ground" was the right thing to do,
and that this was achieved by working hard, tirelessly.
They taught us that effort gives value to work.
And for what?
To make money.
And what do we do with that money?
Houses, cars, top-notch schools for our children...
so they can "succeed."
And then what?
Children grow up and leave.
Everything goes by so fast.
Time slips away.
And there's no going back.
Personally, I would have liked to spend more time with my son.
Give him more quality time.
Yes, we did, but there could have been much more.
My mother once told me:
"When you were children, I had to work hard... and I had no one to guide me through raising you. I did the best I could.
If I had known everything I know today... it would have been a different story."
And yet, I have many quality memories with my mother.
I cherish them deeply.
What I'm getting at is this:
they taught us not to dream,
because "dreaming is useless."
But today, I want to reclaim dreaming.
To dream of a better world.
To dream of a bright childhood.
To dream of a life lived with an awakened soul.
Is dreaming creating? Or is creating dreaming?
Giving materiality to dreams, that is art.
It's not about remaining in the dormant dream, but rather inhabiting the awake and active dream.
The one that propels, that transforms.
Like nature, which never tires of offering us shapes, colors, life.
Creating is a state of expansion.
And I'm not speaking from a materialistic perspective.
I'm talking about learning to beautify life:
our feelings, our emotions,
our way of acting in the world.
How we see and encounter others.
How we respond to what surrounds us.
What we hear, what we read, what we eat...
Making each of these acts
a unique and unrepeatable space.
