Here in Mexico, December 12, the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, marks the official beginning of the Christmas season. January 6, the Day of the Three Wise Men (Los Reyes Magos), marks its conclusion.
This period, the "Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon," is deeply rooted in Mexican tradition, also including as it does the celebration of the posadas (December 16-24), Christmas Eve and Day, the Day of the Holy Innocents (December 28) and New Year's Eve.
This vibrant marathon of celebration encompasses parties, food, drinks, fun, and more drinks, often to excess. The Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon has been recognized in Mexico since the 1990s, with its name originating from a police operation in which checkpoints were set up to ensure that drivers were not operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
The Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon has become a cultural reference among Mexicans, signaling that "the festivities have begun." Originally conceived to protect the pilgrims arriving at the Basilica of Guadalupe, this marathon concluded on January 6, when the safety of the Reyes Magos delivering toys to children was assured.
Everything starts on December 12, the day when a mass is held in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mother of Mexico. On this day, companies host large parties, for employees and their families, with live music, food, raffles, drinks, gifts and more drinks.
Also, businesses distribute bonuses and the balance of annual savings accounts, with prudent wives often taking control of that money to keep it from getting lost during their husband's reveries.
¡Viva México!
