St Paul's Church, Cardo 6

Dear Music Lover,
We welcome the return of fantastic pianist, Dominic Cheli, who wowed our audiences two years ago with his stunning playing. He will play two concerts with different programs at St. Paul’s Church on January 10 and 12, Friday and Sunday at 5 pm. Friday’s program includes works by Handel, Ravel, Beethoven, and Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue. On Sunday, the repertoire will feature music by Brahms, Debussy, Schubert and Liszt.
Cheli was born in 1995 in St. Louis, Missouri, and has rapidly risen to prominence in the classical music world. He began his piano studies at the age of six and demonstrated prodigious talent He Cheli earned his Bachelor’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music and continued at Yale School of Music, obtaining a Master of Music degree while studying with Peter Frankl (who played for us many years ago here!). Cheli completed his formal training with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Colburn School.
Cheli has won numerous awards, including first prize at the 2017 Concert Artists Guild Competition, which catapulted his career. He has performed with major orchestras such as the San Diego Symphony, Columbus Symphony, and Princeton Symphony, and has appeared at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall and the Ravinia Festival. Known for his innovative programming, Cheli often includes his own arrangements and transcriptions in his performances, demonstrating his versatility and creativity. Beyond the concert stage, he is committed to music education, frequently giving master classes and engaging in outreach programs to bring classical music to wider audiences.
Friday’s program promises a delightful mix of styles and periods. Handel’s Chaconne in G major opens with Baroque elegance, followed by Vitali’s Chaconne, enriched by Cheli’s unique arrangement. Albeniz’s Asturias adds a fiery Spanish flair, contrasted by the gentle beauty of Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte. Korngold’s Much Ado About Nothing Suite offers a whimsical journey through the composer’s charming musical vignettes, skillfully arranged by Cheli. Vine’s Piano Sonata No.1 brings a modern edge to the recital, while Beethoven’s An Die Hoffnung again with Cheli’s arrangement, adds a touch of classical depth. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a perennial favorite, promises to dazzle with its jazz-inflected rhythms and exuberant energy.
Sunday’s concert features Brahms’ lyrical waltzes, Debussy’s evocative Masques, and Schubert’s graceful Valses Nobles. We then move on to Schulhoff’s Pittoresken, providing a playful exploration of early 20th-century dance forms. The concert concludes with one of the most difficult works to play in the entire piano repertoire, Liszt’s Dante Sonata, a fiery, dramatic and virtuosic conclusion to an outstanding weekend of piano playing at its virtuosic best, showcasing Cheli’s remarkable range and his ability to bring each piece to life with nuanced interpretation and technical brilliance.
Tickets for the concerts at St. Paul’s are $300, $450 and $650 pesos donation each, and are on sale through our website, and at the concert 45 minutes before performance time.
