San Miguel Playwrights presents its annual SMA Playwrights Showcase 2026, an evening of seven short original plays that span comedy and drama, written by local playwrights and inspired by themes close to the San Miguel community.

Four women, skilled office workers in the 1950s, play bridge at lunchtime and confront a new machine that may replace them.
“Express Lane (to nowhere)” by Lauren Volpini
A routine stop at a high-end grocery store becomes a showdown of entitlement and etiquette that ends in an unexpectedly tender collision of ego and humanity.
“Dad’s Last Supper” by Cyn Posner
When an aging father announces his plan to orchestrate his own dignified exit, his Orthodox son has other ideas—turning a final farewell into a chaotic clash of beliefs. A dark comedy about control, mortality, and the absurdity of family love.
“Cafe Parenthése” by Barbery Byfield
A mother suffering a rare vision disturbance travels to Paris to visit her estranged daughter. As they reveal their very different life agendas, they attempt to repair a fragile bond.
“Crossing Lines” by Phoebe Greyson
One woman’s act of mercy turns her into a symbol she never intended to be. A story about shifting laws, unshifting hearts, and the quiet fury of ordinary conscience.
“Anita in Swingville” by Lia Gladstone

The San Miguel Playwrights group, founded by Mark Saunders fourteen years ago, is dedicated to supporting playwrights from page to stage through structured feedback and revision. Audience response from the Showcase provides important insight for future development.
