Bringing Out the Bodies
Kathleen Cammarata creates drawings and mixed mediums on paper that explores the beauty and complexity of the human form. This kind of art, the depiction of the body, can never be neutral like the drawing of a chair.
The practice of drawing from a nude model did not develop until the fifteenth century in Renaissance Florence. It coincided with the availability of cheap paper manufactured for the newly invented printing press. This paper allowed artists to make exploratory drawings. The sketchbook was a byproduct of this period.
What ensued in painting was a routine exploitation of the female body as a signifier of erotic desire. In the time of the European nude the painters, the spectators and the collectors were men. The “Venus of Urbino” by Titian and “Olympia” by Manet are two examples of a large number of this genre of works.
In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries artists emerged, many of whom were women, who depicted all aspects of the body. Their drawings and paintings acknowledge the body’s physicality. Contemporary works express feelings and even pain. Two known artists in this category are Louise Bourgeois and Marlene Dumas. And an extraordinary example of this genre is Frida Kahlo. Cammarata creates work in this category.
In Cammarata’s drawings the female body reveals interior thoughts and experiences. Figures have an attitude. Hands gesture with feeling. Faces are absent or in shadow rather than having a flirtatious look in the eyes or on the lips.The figure is never laying down on the couch. The figure is now a body. The drawings are a testimony to the human condition.
Cammarata has been drawing and painting for 40 years. She taught drawing, painting and printmaking in two museums. She was the Printmaking Professor at UMass Lowell. She has won over two dozen awards and grants. She has had 24 solo shows including the Belles Artes in San Miguel. She had a figurative solo exhibition at the Museo de Arte de Queretaro in 2025 consisting of 12 paintings and 60 drawings. 26,564 visitors attended the show. She is in collections in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Sacando a los cuerpos
Kathleen Cammarata crea dibujos y técnicas mixtas sobre papel que exploran la belleza y la complejidad de la forma humana. Este tipo de arte, la representación del cuerpo, nunca puede ser neutral como el dibujo de una silla.
La práctica de dibujar a partir de un modelo desnudo no se desarrolló sino hasta el siglo XV en la Florencia renacentista. Coincidió con la disponibilidad de papel barato fabricado para la recién inventada imprenta. Este papel permitió a los artistas realizar dibujos exploratorios. El cuaderno de bocetos fue un subproducto de este periodo.
Lo que siguió en la pintura fue una explotación rutinaria del cuerpo femenino como significante del deseo erótico. En la época del desnudo europeo los pintores, los espectadores y los coleccionistas eran hombres. La “Venus de Urbino” de Tiziano y “Olympia” de Manet son dos ejemplos entre un gran número de obras de este género.
En los siglos XX y XXI surgieron artistas, muchos de ellos mujeres, que representaron todos los aspectos del cuerpo. Sus dibujos y pinturas reconocen la fisicalidad del cuerpo. Las obras contemporáneas expresan sentimientos e incluso dolor. Dos artistas reconocidas en esta categoría son Louise Bourgeois y Marlene Dumas. Y un ejemplo extraordinario de este género es Frida Kahlo. Cammarata crea obra dentro de esta categoría.
En los dibujos de Cammarata el cuerpo femenino revela pensamientos y experiencias interiores. Las figuras tienen actitud. Las manos gesticulan con sentimiento. Los rostros están ausentes o en sombra en lugar de tener una mirada coqueta en los ojos o en los labios. La figura nunca está recostada en un diván. La figura ahora es un cuerpo. Los dibujos son un testimonio de la condición humana.
Cammarata ha dibujado y pintado durante 40 años. Enseñó dibujo, pintura y grabado en dos museos. Fue profesora de grabado en UMass Lowell. Ha ganado más de dos docenas de premios y becas. Ha tenido 24 exposiciones individuales, incluyendo en Bellas Artes en San Miguel. Presentó una exposición individual figurativa en el Museo de Arte de Querétaro en 2025, compuesta por 12 pinturas y 60 dibujos. 26,564 visitantes asistieron a la muestra. Su obra forma parte de colecciones en Estados Unidos, Canadá y México.
