In-person writing workshops
HOW IT WORKS
First Hour—Bring something you've written to share with the group (4 mins. max). An excerpt of a longer piece is fine.
Sharing is optional, and encouraged.
You will receive positive comments from group members:
What's particularly engaging... What will stay with me...
Clarifying questions: I was a little lost midway, is the narrator______?
REMINDER: No critique or suggestions unless the writer specifically requests it.
Second Hour—Samples of fine writing will demonstrate literary techniques, elicit ideas and memories, and inspire you to write with more honesty and clarity. I include craft essays, short forms of creative nonfiction and poetry by notable writers, established and emerging.
BRING: Your favorite writing tools (notebook/laptop, tablet).
BYOBeverage
An open mind and generous heart. Everything shared is confidential.
EACH WEEK: You can expect to leave with one, two, or more first drafts of stories, vignettes, personal essays, or poems written for personal satisfaction and/or eventual publication. We subscribe to a combination of Intuitive Writing and Intentional Writing.
— During group writing times (2-3 per session), you are welcome to focus on your own project or go with the flow of the exercises and prompts. We work primarily with short form creative nonfiction (memoir, personal essay) and autofiction (autobiographical fiction) in prose, verse, or hybrid/experimental forms such as braided or hermit crab essays.
