Growing Community
Strengthening the Local Economy

Lokkal is:

 • a digital town square, local internet, like the Yellow Pages robustly reborn for the new millennium

 • non-commercial, in the public domain, a non-profit public utility with profits donated to or invested in the local community (through Lokkal Foundation)

 • a local: event calendar, magazine, social network (like Facebook or Instagram), search engine (like Google), directory, map...

Local curation of local content

Currently, we, the public, upload content to social networks (Facebook, et al.) that sell ads next to our content. Similarly, Google searches our online content and sells ads in their search results (which is our content).

Lokkal's local social network and local search engine are in the public domain, applying the most successful business strategy of all time on the local level in the public interest.

Boots on the ground (Collective Human Intelligence), local curation, creates a better local search engine than can Google remotely with all of its resources: "Thank you, Big Tech, but we will present our own city to the planet."

Economic permaculture

Agricultural permaculture: a) digs holes to catch the rain, b) creating pools of water rather than letting the rain flow away, c) allowing the water to permeate into the local water table, d) creating an oasis. Lokkal is economic permaculture: a) preventing local wealth (advertising dollars) from being extracted (by Facebook, Google, et al.), b) keeping the money flowing in the local economy, c) blessing another person (or group of people) every time it changes hands.

Growing community

Microfinance is only limited by the lack of available funding. Lokkal, operated as a public utility, invests or donates all profits in the community's interest.

Better local communication fosters community. Healthier local community is the answer to most of the problems facing society today. Localism, promoting local flavor, resists the flattening effects of globalism.

Practically

In each town, Lokkal starts with an event calendar. We have programs to gather events and AI can help a lot, but we need boots on the ground, local people (perhaps only one or two) to actively collect events.

People like to see what is going on. Hotel concierges love to recommend Lokkal's event calendar to their guests. Existing local calendars are incomplete. The calendar, all by itself, is a very useful public service.

Then, we need local people to collect local content into Lokkal's local database, which is the basis of our local search engine: curate your passion or your neighborhood.

Also, we can develop Lokkal's other functions: magazine, forum, curated map, calendar of classes, movie schedule, nightlife schedule, news service...

This project is extremely sustainable. As the go-to website for all things local, Lokkal will attract advertising dollars and sponsorship.
