Antonio Cornelio Rendón is a Michoacan artisan, originally from the Magical Town of Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán. At a very early age he began to work with vegetable fiber and to make pieces of panikua (wheat stick), learning this trade from his grandfather and his father, who work handicrafts in this artisanal branch at home, in addition to dedicating themselves together with his mother trade, agriculture and fishing.
At the age of 15, Antonio began to make decorative ornaments for special dates such as Christmas, Easter, among other festivities in his town. His inclination was for the elaboration of woven stars, crowns, births, Christs, batons, flattened figures, to name a few.
The talent, creativity and dexterity of Cornelio Rendón led him to venture years later with more laborious techniques, to manipulate popotillo (also called panikua) with more complex pieces and to specialize in making stars, with which he has obtained several awards in state and national craft competitions, in addition to the fact that his crafts are also known in some European countries, since in 2012 he made pieces to decorate the Vatican tree, in Rome, Italy.
Passionate about his work, he creates in his mind the different shapes of stars, as well as their proportions and sizes. As he imagines them, he captures his idea and also the requests that the client asks of him.
"In my mind, I first imagine the figure that I am going to make and on that I work my piece until it forms a great star," says artisan Antonio.
Antonio Cornelio Rendón es un artesano michoacano, originario del Pueblo Mágico de Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán. A muy temprana edad comenzó a trabajar la fibra vegetal y a elaborar piezas de panikua (palo de trigo), aprendiendo este oficio de su abuelo y su padre, quienes trabajan artesanalmente esta rama artesanal en su casa, además de dedicarse junto con su madre al comercio, la agricultura y la pesca.
A la edad de 15 años, Antonio comenzó a realizar adornos decorativos para fechas especiales como Navidad, Semana Santa, entre otras festividades de su pueblo. Su inclinación fue por la elaboración de estrellas tejidas, coronas, nacimientos, Cristos, bastones de mando, figuras aplanadas, por mencionar algunos.
El talento, creatividad y destreza de Cornelio Rendón lo llevaron a incursionar años después con técnicas más laboriosas, a manipular el popotillo (también llamado panikua) con piezas más complejas y a especializarse en la elaboración de estrellas, con las que ha obtenido diversos reconocimientos en concursos artesanales estatales y nacionales, además de que sus artesanías también son conocidas en algunos países de Europa, pues en 2012 realizó piezas para adornar el árbol del Vaticano, en Roma, Italia.
Apasionado de su trabajo, crea en su mente las diferentes formas de las estrellas, así como sus proporciones y tamaños. Mientras las imagina, plasma su idea y también las peticiones que le hace el cliente.
"En mi mente, primero imagino la figura que voy a hacer y sobre ella trabajo mi pieza hasta que se formar una gran estrella", dice el artesano Antonio.

Amate Painting / Papel Amate

Amate painting is a Mexican folk art developed in the state of Puebla, but today it is practiced mainly in the state of Guerrero. The process involves both the creation of bark paper from wild figs, nettles or mulberry trees, and their painting, which is most often done to depict brightly colored scenes of daily life, history or nature.
Master craftsman José Dámaso creates fantasies of brightly colored birds and animals. He is one of the most respected artisans who continue this tradition.
Papel amate: La pintura amate es un arte popular mexicano desarrollado en el estado de Puebla, pero hoy en día se practica principalmente en el estado de Guerrero. El proceso implica tanto la creación del papel de corteza a partir de higos silvestres, ortigas o moreras, como su pintura, que se realiza con mayor frecuencia para representar escenas de colores brillantes de la vida diaria, la historia o la naturaleza.
El maestro artesano José Dámaso crea fantasías de pájaros y animales de colores brillantes. Es uno de los artesanos más respetados que continúan con esta tradición.

La Familia Soteno y La Tlanchana

It is said that at the entrance to the Metepec-Lerma plain there was a creature, half woman and half aquatic serpent. It was the tlanchana (mermaid).
Traditionally represented in clay, this is a craft that distinguishes Metepec nationally and internationally. Its shape is half fish, crowned and with flowers, playing a guitar, pigmented with natural dyes.
The Soteno family is a family originally from Metepec, State of Mexico, internationally recognized for their work in pottery. Modesta Fernandez started the tradition of Soteno mermaids, which are characterized by their beautiful colors and whimsical shapes, a tradition continued by her family generations later.
Traditionally it is said that a house with a tlanchana will never lack for anything.

La Familia Soteno y La Tlanchana
Se dice que al ingresar al llano de Metepec-Lerma había una criatura, mitad mujer y mitad serpiente acuática. Era la tlanchana (sirena), tradicionalmente representada en barro, y es una artesanía que distingue a Metepec a nivel nacional e internacional. Su forma es de medio pez, coronado y con flores, tocando una guitarra, pigmentado con tintes naturales.
La familia Soteno es una familia originaria de Metepec, Estado de México, reconocida internacionalmente por su trabajo en alfarería. Modesta Fernández inició la tradición de las sirenas soteno, que se caracterizan por sus hermosos colores y formas caprichosas. Una tradición continuada por su familia generaciones después.
Tradicionalmente se dice que a una casa con tlanchana nunca le faltará de nada.

Juana Gómez Ramírez is a Tzeltal artisan from Amatenango del Valle in Chiapas.
She is known for her majestic and magical jaguars made of hand-raised, modeled and cold polychromed clay. In 2013 she was recognized by the Banamex Cultural Fund as one of the great artisans of the country. Her pieces have been exhibited in the United States, England, Belgium, Spain and Australia. Her work is part of the book Grandes Maestros del Arte Popular Iberoamérica.

Hi, I am Marina. You may already know me. Today is a very special day because I am in Uruapan in the contest of artisans from all over Michoacan here in the house of culture. This is one of my favorite moments of the year.
Here is a selection of extraordinary pineapples from San Jose de Gracia. You may recognize some that I have in the store. This is one of them, a wonderful red pineapple the artist Dani. The are many from different artists, who are members of the same family that make these extraordinary pieces. The atmosphere here is wonderful. I have found jewels that you that you will have to come and see in my store in San Miguel.
The atmosphere here is one of craftsmanship and beauty that fills our souls. There is no other place in the world like Michoacán. Here there is such a wealth of incredible works of art, unique in the world.

Olinalá Scratching

The Olinalá scratching technique is elaborated with the mineral dolomite, combined with chia oil and pigmented with natural dyes produced in the region.
The piece is executed with a technique called rayado, in which the artisan with the help of a maguey thorn, needle or feather, engraves the desired design on the second layer of lacquer, thus exposing the first color placed on the piece.
This process can take several months to complete.

La técnica del rayado de olinalá es elaborado con el mineral dolomita, combinado con aceite de chía y pigmentado con tintes naturales elaborados en la región.
Se interviene la pieza con una técnica denominada -Rayado;
En el cual el artesano con la ayuda de una espina de maguey, aguja o pluma, graba el diseño deseado sobre la segunda capa de laca, dejando así al descubierto el primer color colocado sobre la pieza.
Este proceso puede tardar varios meses en completarse.

Huichol Yarn Paintings

These Huichol paintings are made by the traditional technique of yarn pressed thread by thread onto Campeche wax.
For the Huichol these are sacred altars endowed with all the symbolism of their peyote ceremonies.
Marina has designed the color palette to emphasize the unique beauty of the Huichol and to honor the ancestral importance of this art form.
