Enjoy a variety of interesting readings by some of our local San Miguel authors: Ellen Akerman, Jan Baross, Sandra Gulland and Stanley Klein, at lovely Hotel Casa de la Noche. Books will be available for purchase.

Ellen Akerman finds inspiration in Mexico, yoga-ing, practicing Spanish, eating mangoes and dancing wherever music is playing. She feels fortunate to have lived in the world of children, teaching more than thirty years in Ontario, Canada. Ellen will be reading from Shirley’s Story: A Life of Finesse, an unexpected collaboration between mother and daughter. All the words left in plain sight at the end of her mother’s life, filling a clear plastic storage container. Sitting in the same closet sat a locked filing cabinet containing documents brown with age revealing a secret that Shirley could never share. Shirley’s journals, memoir pieces and military documents have been connected with the help of her daughter, Ellen.

Jan Baross is an award-winning novelist, documentary filmmaker, photographer, screenwriter, playwright, librettist, film critic and taught filmmaking at Oregon State University. Stan Klein and his wife Marcia took early retirement at age 60 because they wanted to spend their time traveling. After the first year in which they saw much of the world, they realized it was not as fulfilling as they had hoped for. That’s when they made volunteer work an integral part of their travel. Spending several months each year working in many countries with nongovernmental agencies turned out to be a good choice for them. Sandra Gulland is an American-born Canadian novelist. She is the author of The Shadow Queen and Mistress of the Sun, novels set in the court of Louis XIV, as well as a trilogy of novels based on the life of Josephine Bonaparte. Her latest published novel — The Game of Hope — is a Young Adult about Napoleon's step-daughter and she’s now writing a Young Adult about the teen-aged Queen Elizabeth I to be published by Penguin/Random House. To date, Gulland’s novels have been published in fifteen countries and translated into thirteen languages. She lives half the year in San Miguel and the other half in Ontario.

Sandra Gulland es una novelista canadiense nacida en Estados Unidos, autora de The Shadow Queen y Mistress of the Sun, novelas ambientadas en la corte de Luis XIV, así como de la aclamada Trilogía de Josefina B. basada en la vida de Josefina Bonaparte. Su novela más reciente, The Game of Hope, está dirigida al público juvenil y narra la historia de la hijastra de Napoleón.
