“Once Upon A Time In San Miguel”

After 2 ½ years of living here, it really does feel like I’ve landed in the middle of a beautifully illustrated storybook. People here are genuinely courteous and kind. We greet each other when walking down the street with a friendly “Buen dia!” The scenery can look like magic. You can stand at the top of any street and see light reflecting brilliantly off the front of centuries-old traditional Mexican facades. The skies are true cartoon blue. The streets are paved with individually unique, hand-cut stones. Every time I turn around, there is another music and dance-filled festival to celebrate a beloved saint, a historic battle or an indigenous holiday. The nightlife is as picture-perfect as the daylife. Even the stray animals are friendly here, as if they might be auditioning for the role of your new BFF.

These are the moments of movement, music and beauty I like to capture in my artworks. And happily, there hasn’t been any shortage of dance volunteers and vistas since I arrived here. It’s a special feeling to shine a spotlight on local friends and strangers in this community and to capture those intimate moments, not with a photograph, but in a painterly way that can change each time you examine it…just like life itself.

On a more technical level, I take a video and make screenshots and then I choose the best one to paint from. Choosing between two video frames, shot only a fraction of a second apart, is a process that is both thoughtful and intuitive. Back when I was a high school art teacher in the Chicago Public School system, I had to make the most out of our limited art supply budget–I taught the students that they could make thousands of colors just by mixing basic red, yellow, blue and white–and to this day, I continue to practice what I preached. To me, it creates a look more bonafide than a paint set with dozens of pretty colors. Shadows and light are always a main part of my focus, and I also strive to convey details (as opposed to re-creating them) with impressionistic brushstrokes. If I have a goal with a specific painting, it is to combine these materials and techniques with figurative and painterly movement, in order to create a feel of lightheartedness and joy.

“Érase una vez en San Miguel”

Después de dos años y medio de vivir aquí, realmente siento como si hubiera aterrizado en medio de un libro de cuentos bellamente ilustrado. La gente aquí es realmente cortés y amable. Nos saludamos al caminar por la calle con un amistoso “¡Buen día!” El paisaje puede parecer mágico. Puedes pararte en lo alto de cualquier calle y ver la luz reflejándose brillantemente en las fachadas tradicionales mexicanas centenarias. Los cielos son de un verdadero azul de dibujos animados. Las calles están pavimentadas con piedras individualmente únicas y cortadas a mano. Cada vez que volteo, hay otro festival lleno de música y danza para celebrar a un santo amado, una batalla histórica o una fiesta indígena. La vida nocturna es tan perfecta como la vida diurna. Incluso los animales callejeros son amigables aquí, como si estuvieran audicionando para el papel de tu nuevo mejor amigo.

Estos son los momentos de movimiento, música y belleza que me gusta capturar en mis obras de arte. Y, afortunadamente, no han faltado voluntarios de danza ni vistas desde que llegué aquí. Es un sentimiento especial destacar a amigos y extraños locales en esta comunidad y capturar esos momentos íntimos, no con una fotografía, sino de una manera pictórica que puede cambiar cada vez que la examinas... como la vida misma.

A un nivel más técnico, grabo un vídeo y hago capturas de pantalla y luego elijo el mejor para pintar. Elegir entre dos fotogramas de vídeo, grabados con sólo una fracción de segundo de diferencia, es un proceso reflexivo e intuitivo. Cuando era profesor de arte en una escuela secundaria del sistema de escuelas públicas de Chicago, tenía que aprovechar al máximo nuestro limitado presupuesto para suministros de arte: les enseñé a los estudiantes que podían crear miles de colores simplemente mezclando rojo, amarillo, azul y blanco básicos, y hasta el día de hoy sigo practicando lo que prediqué. Para mí, crea una apariencia más auténtica que un juego de pintura con docenas de bonitos colores. Las sombras y la luz son siempre una parte principal de mi enfoque, y también me esfuerzo por transmitir detalles (en lugar de recrearlos) con pinceladas impresionistas. Si tengo un objetivo con una pintura específica, es combinar estos materiales y técnicas con el movimiento figurativo y pictórico, para crear una sensación de alegría y alegría.

“Érase una vez en San Miguel” La recepción de apertura será el viernes 14 de noviembre de 5 a 8 pm. El espectáculo se extenderá hasta el 6 de diciembre.
