Right now, the fate of nearly a million young, educated, productive, de facto Americans brought to the US as infants or children hangs in the balance. Since 2012, they have been protected from deportation by DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy signed by President Obama. The current president wants to end DACA; the supreme court will decide.
Join PEN on Tuesday, Mar 3, at 6:30 PM in the second-floor auditorium of the Bellas Artes to hear United We Dream Executive Director and Cofounder Cristina Jiménez discuss "Hope in a Time of Darkness: The Resilience of US Immigrants under Attack"
United We Dream (UWD) is the largest immigrant youth-led network in the country. Cristina Jiménez was part of the UWD campaign team that spearheaded the historic victory of DACA. Under her leadership, UWD has grown to a powerful network of over 100 groups and 500,000 members.
Many of us are familiar with the term "Dreamers." Many Dreamers are Americans by virtue of having been born in the Americas; many are North Americans, having been born in Mexico. Cristina Jiménez—community organizer, strategist and freedom fighter—was born in Ecuador, in South America. She came to the U.S. with her family at the age of 13, attending high school and college in New York as an undocumented student.
Of course, it's not just Dreamers who are under attack; current US policy affects almost all immigrants, whether from the Americas, the Middle East, Africa or just about any place aside from Europe.
Cristina has been organizing in immigrant communities for over a decade. For her work as a social justice organizer she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine, and was awarded a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 2017. She currently serves on the board of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, the Hazen Foundation, Make the Road New York Action and the Dream.US.

En este momento, el destino de casi un millón de jóvenes, educados, productivos, de facto estadounidenses traídos a Estados Unidos cuando eran bebés o niños pende de un hilo. Desde 2012 han sido protegidos de la deportación por DACA, la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia firmada por el presidente Obama. El presidente actual quiere terminar con DACA, la suprema corte decidirá.
Únase al PEN el martes 3 de marzo a las 6:30 p.m. en el auditorio de segundo piso de Bellas Artes para escuchar a la directora ejecutiva y cofundadora de United We Dream (Soñamos Unidos), Cristina Jiménez, hablar sobre "Esperanza en tiempos de oscuridad: la resiliencia de los inmigrantes de Estados Unidos bajo ataque".
United We Dream (UWD) es la red dirigida por jóvenes inmigrantes más grande del país. Cristina Jiménez fue parte del equipo de campaña de UWD que encabezó la histórica victoria de DACA. Bajo su liderazgo, UWD se ha convertido en una poderosa red de más de 100 grupos y 500,000 miembros.

Journeys of Hope, Journeys in Time: San Miguel PEN's 2020 Winter Lecture Series

Migration is perhaps the ultimate journey of hope. In the 34th annual San Miguel PEN Winter Lecture Series, three speakers are very much a part of that story. Padre Alejandro Solalinde founded the migrant shelter Hermanos en el Camino, Brothers on the Road, in Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca, near the tracks carrying freight trains loaded with Central American migrants. On Jan 21, with his coauthor, journalist and radio commentator Karla María Gutiérrez, he'll discuss his work and his new book, Revelations of a Missionary: My Itinerant Life.
Cuban-American cultural anthropologist and author Ruth Behar was named a "Great Immigrant" by the Carnegie Corporation. On Feb 4, she'll reflect on her travels in Spain, Mexico and Cuba, on what "home" means today and on new ways of thinking about belonging in the world.
Cristina Jimenez, executive director and cofounder of United We Dream, the largest US network of immigrant youth, will share inspiring stories of hope, courage and "joyful resistance" from the frontlines. (Mar 3)
Three other speakers will take us on journeys through time. Texas writer M.M. McAllen will kick off the series on Jan 14 with the 19th-century story of Europe's last empire in Mexico and the brief, tragic reign of Maximilian and Carlota.
On Jan 28, writer and former advertising creative director Betty Londergan will take us to the 20th-century US in "A Tale of Two Bettys: Betty Friedan as Feminist Icon & Complicated Woman," based on her forthcoming book, Who the Hell is Betty Friedan?
Another Texas writer, also a journalist and documentary filmmaker, John Phillip Santos will explore the profound connections between ancient and modern Mexico, and what these may reveal about the country's future. (Feb 18)
Finally, a special treat in a special venue: on Feb 25, noted opera dramaturg, Julliard faculty member and Concurso San Miguel judge Cori Ellison will demonstrate the transformative power of opera, a symbol of hope, love, freedom, and transcendence. "To See Your Soul," a joint presentation with Opera San Miguel, will be held in the Rosewood Hotel Ballroom.
All talks will be bilingual, via either Spanish or English supertitles or live translation. Each talk includes a Q&A, and in many cases books to buy. Note new start time, 6:30 pm.

Viajes de esperanza, viajes en el tiempo, Serie de conferencias invernales 2020 del PEN de San Miguel

La migración es el último viaje de esperanza. En la 34ª serie de conferencias invernales del PEN de San Miguel, tres de los oradores forman parte de esta historia. El padre Alejandro Solalinde fundó el refugio para migrantes Hermanos en el Camino en Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca cerca de las vías del tren llenos de migrantes centroamericanos. El 21 de enero, junto a su coautora Karla María Gutiérrez, periodista y comentarista de radio, él discutirá su trabajo y su nuevo libro, Revelaciones de un Misionero: Mi Vida Itinerante.
La antropóloga cultural y autora americana-cubana Ruth Behar fue nombrada "La Gran Inmigrante" por la Corporación Carnegie. El 4 de febrero ella reflexionará sobre sus viajes a España, México y Cuba, sobre qué significa "hogar" hoy en día y nuevas maneras de pensar acerca de pertenecer al mundo.
Cristina Jiménez, directora ejecutiva y cofundadora de United We Dream, la red más grande de jóvenes migrantes en Estados Unidos, compartirá historias de esperanza, valor y resistencia dichosa, desde el frente, el 3 de marzo.
Otros tres oradores nos llevarán a un viaje a través del tiempo. La escritora texana, M. M. McAllen estrenará la serie el 14 enero con el último imperio europeo en México en el siglo XIX, el breve y trágico reinado de Maximiliano y Carlota.
El 28 de enero la escritora y antigua directora de publicidad Betty Londergan nos llevará a un viaje a Estados Unidos en el siglo XX en "Un cuento de dos Betty Friedans: ícono feminista y mujer complicada," basado en su próximo libro, ¿Quién demonios es Betty Friedan?
Otro escritor texano también periodista y cineasta de documentales, John Phillip Santos, explorará las conexiones entre el México de antes y de ahora, y lo que dicen acerca del futuro del país. (18 de febrero)
El 25 de febrero, un evento especial en un lugar especial, la destacada dramaturga de ópera, miembro de la facultad de Julliard y jueza del Concurso San Miguel Cori Ellison, nos mostrará el poder transformativo de la ópera, un símbolo de esperanza, amor, libertad y trascendencia. "Ver su alma," una presentación coauspiciada con Opera San Miguel, estará en el Salón de Baile del Hotel Rosewood.
