On Saturday, January 21, we'll bird along the Rio Laja near the bridge at Montecillo de Nieto, just past the back road into Atotonilco. The varied habitat includes a tree-lined river trail and grassland, with open sky for raptors.

Resident raptors we might see include a Crested Caracara and a Turkey Vulture, while winter visitors include Sharp-shinned Hawk and American Kestrel, our smallest falcon.

Among other visiting species, in the past we've had some rare sightings, including an Indigo Bunting, a White-crowned Sparrow and a Tricolored Heron. More common winter visitors include Lark, Clay-colored and Chipping Sparrows, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and both Wilson's and Yellow-rumped (western, Audubon's) Warblers.

From smaller to larger, resident birds that particularly like a watery habitat include Black Phoebe, Green Kingfisher, Cattle Egret, Snowy Egret, White-faced Ibis and Great Egret. And we'll look for such resident songbirds as Blue and Black-headed Grosbeaks, Say's Phoebe, Vermilion Flycatcher, a flock of Bushtits and a yellow-faced Verdin.
